Anti-Racist Leadership
My views of anti-racist leadership are inspired by Malcolm X’s words that “we can’t lead where we won’t go.” I've guided several international organizations to take a journey of self-discovery and engage in the inner work of personal transformation. As leaders, we cannot expect our international school communities to critically reflect on their biases if we don’t do so ourselves. We also know that our school communities are not culturally-neutral terrains. Especially in international settings, community members bring diverse identities, lived experiences, and worldviews to our schools. We must ensure that our schools don’t erase but affirm who our community members are. Anti-racist leadership calls us to “go” deeper into not only leading explorations of self but also others.
Still, we must also explore how we can develop anti-racist community members and communities. This involves us engaging in anti-racist action.
I've also provided key contributions to the Diversity Collaborative, whether leading some of the collaborative's first sessions on anti-racism or drafting the current iteration of organization's mission, vision, and guiding principles. Below, please find a sample of my contributions to the ISS Diversity Collaborative.
I've also led three professional development sessions for ISS staff around DEIJ to foster employee knowledge of antiracism, privilege, bias, and related concepts, with the intention of developing a core of other ISS colleagues willing to provide such training internally. I hope to fulfill my original intentions in ways that I have with other international school organizations. A copy of the session slides I facilitated with ISS can be found below.
